My wife and I rented a 3 bedroom property in Hove with Leaders in 2019. Our entire interaction and experience with the Property Management Team and the property itself was appalling and extremely stressful throughout our tenancy. Here were our main issues:
• The Property Management team. The sheer amount of time and effort we spent calling and emailing the PMT to get a response to any of the issues we had with the property was not acceptable. The total lack of care shown for our health, the property and just not responding to issues raised was appalling. We were made to feel like we were being ignored and that the issues we had raised just weren’t important to the PMT or the landlord.
• Property issues. We were paying £1550 a month for a three bedroom house that was supposed to be our family home. It was a lot of money and we expected a certain standard of living that was not met.
o Water coming through the walls in back bedroom. We were unable to use the third bedroom for five of those six months because of water damage to the walls.
o Dangerous carpet on the stairs. There were spikes sticking out of the carpet on the stairs that were a danger to us and our two year old son. I cut my foot on them (through socks) twice, and we lived in constant worry that our son would also get cut, so we had to always carry him up the stairs.
o Hole under skirting board in kitchen. Another part of the property that was unsafe for our son and we were told would be fixed before we moved in – that never happened.
o Damp in front bedroom. There was damp under the windows in the front bedroom. We left the windows opened and adhered to the condensation guidelines as provided by Leaders. No matter how hard we tried, the damp was unmanageable. We were cleaning the walls under the windows every other day.
• Deposit return. In total, it took six weeks that consisted of countless emails and phone calls for our deposit to be finally returned to us. No-one in the PMT ever bothered to contact us about the deposit, we had to constantly chase them for any update. The only way we got anything done was by refusing to come off the phone until someone gave us an answer. I even had a manager promise me by the COB that I’d receive a response, of which nothing materialised. This is unacceptable and shocking service. We still haven’t received any kind of confirmation email to let us know it has been officially transferred back.
So if you want an estate agent with appalling customer service who doesn’t care about you or the property, then sign up with Leaders. We will not be using Leaders again and will inform all of our friends and family to do the same.
